Marietta and the Magical Emerald

    This is a story I wrote in Bridges Project Ink writing class. It's about a fairy named Marietta and a scientist named Draco:

Chapter One: The Land of Sunny Maple

     Once upon a time, far, far away in the Land of Sunny Maple, if you looked close enough you would see golden, shimmering Almond Castle.  Strong, stone towers with clear, beautiful windows stood tall.  The castle had wooden steps so lovely they looked fake.  It was a lovely place were flowers grew every day.  All around it you could see the old sandy-brown trees of Butterfly Forest which blue birds filled in the sunny summer.  Next to it you could hear the whistling ocean-blue water of Diamond waterfall as loud of a elephant's trumpet.  You could also smell the fresh, syrupy melted chocolate from Bellflower Chocolate Lake.  It was a magical place where strange, enchanting things happened, especially when the chocolate plants gracefully grew under the cinnamon-brown lake.

Chapter Two: Marietta

      In the land of Sunny maple, there also lived a smart fairy named Marietta. She had beautiful wings with light-pink swirly designs of butterflies on them because she loved how butterflies floated through the air.  Her soft rose-pink hair was like a flower blowing in the wind whenever she flew around. When you looked at her you could see her dazzling feet, as smooth as round pebbles with pink toenail polish. She always wore a sparkly dress which was made out of silk and shimmered in the sun when ever she zoomed through the clouds. She also wore a pink barrette which was shaped like a daisy and kept her thin hair out of her lovely face when she played with the butterflies.  Marietta always carried a magical emerald seed that could grow into anything she commanded.  She hid it in her pouch so that she could make sure no one faced any danger.

Chapter Three: Draco

    In the Land of Sunny Maple there also lived a scientist named Draco.  His large peach-orange nose smelled his experiments in his lab, and had a wild mustache sitting underneath it.  His large, black eyes were like the dark night shining in the silver moon light.  When you looked at him, you could see silver-gray hair as spiky as porcupine quills poking someone.  He always wore aqua-blue glasses, which looked like the ocean when he greedily smiled.  he also wore a sky-blue tie which quickly swung around his neck because it was very heavy.  Draco always wanted to steal the chocolate plants underneath the cinnamon-brown Bellflower Chocolate Lake because he loved chocolate.

Chapter Four: Draco's plan

    One windy afternoon something terrible happened in the Land of Sunny Maple.  It all started because Draco wanted to selfishly steal the chocolate plants away from the lake.  First he quietly walked over the bridge as fast as a tiger towards the lake. At that moment, Draco dove into Bellflower Chocolate Lake and speedily dashed down to the yummy plants.  He was so happy he danced around the because he now knew he could eat all the chocolate he wanted.  Anyone could see that he wanted to do something bad because of his greedy smile.  Then he grabbed the sweet plants so quickly he jumped back up to the surface in three seconds.  You could see the lake turning into sticky chocolate quicksand mysteriously.  And, it sounded as if there was a huge earthquake, shaking the ground very hard.  All around him sat the remains of the plants like the leaves and steams.  At last, he silently raced back to the shore until he turned around and there was Marietta.  There was a moment of silence as they stared at each other. At the same time, there was a feeling of hunger among all the citizens.  Instantly, Draco ran away with the valuable plants back to his smelly cottage.  Draco  felt so happy he could have eaten 100 pounds of chocolate.  Draco cheerfully whispered, "Ha-ha-ha! Now I can eat so much chocolate!"
        Marietta sadly muttered, "I need to do something and fast!!"

Chapter Five: The Chocolate Plants are Returned

    Then at that moment Marietta remembered her Magical Emerald seed, so she grabbed it and flew slowly off to the lake. At that moment , she threw the seed into the chocolate quicksand and shouted "Grow more chocolate plants!!!"  She was so happy she could have flew all the way up to the sun. Anyone around could see that she was excited because she had a twinkle in her eyes.  In a flash she joyfully flew as fast as a humming bird after Draco.  You could see her shimmering wings fluttering 1000 times per minute! And, it sounded as if a giant jumped up and down ten times because her wings flapped really hard. All around her loud noises almost made her fall to the ground but she pushed forward until she caught up to Draco.  Then she convinced Draco to give back some of the chocolate plants so he walked back slowly back to Bellflower Chocolate Lake.  There was a long moment of silence as Draco gave back the plants.  And at the same time the plants started to grow very quickly until they reached the  top of the lake.  Instantly all the  villagers came down to the lake and ate some chocolate cheering for Marietta.  Marietta felt so cheerful she could have hugged all the villagers. Marietta kindly shouted "Thank you for giving back the plants!!"  Draco slowly replied "Your welcome, but can I keep one?  Marietta happily answered "You can. Go plant it!"  In the end Draco raced home and ate chocolate.  Then they all lived happily after ever.

About the Author and Dedication

    Neela Emilie Michelsen is the author of Marietta and the Magical Emerald.  She is in third grade and participated in  the 2013 Project Ink writing camp this summer where she wrote this story.  She has one younger brother, Nirav and one younger sister Naiya who are both fun to play with and she loves to play kitchen with them.  Neela likes to read books such as Winter according to Humphrey and the Judy Blume series because they allow her to relax from running  around.  She also likes to play at the  park with Nirav and Naiya.  In her spare time, Neela plays music on the piano, songs such as "Somewhere over the Rainbow."  When she grows up she would like to be a baker because she likes to bake cookies, especially chocolate ones.  Neela would like to dedicate her story to her mom because she helps her bake cookies.

Swim team

Hi.
    I signed up in swim team.  The days I do swim practice are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. On Saturdays I have Swim meets too.  Last Saturday I had my first Swim meet.

    On that day it was my brother's birthday party.  He is six years old now.

     At the party I lost my second tooth.  I can feel the first adult tooth coming in.  Now when I smile I look funny.  My mom says I talk funny but I don't think I do.

  The day after that was father's day. I painted a frame at an art place and put a picture in it and my brother drew a light house.

Zoomars

Today we went to Zoomars.  We saw guinea pigs, rabbits, alpacas, llamas, goats and an ostrich.  We rode on horses.  There were three sizes, small, medium and large horses.  I went two times on the medium one.    When my friend fed a carrot to the alpaca, it burped and got carrot all over her forehead.  We fed the guinea pigs, rabbits, goats and an ostrich. There was a ball-pit with dried corn kernels in it.  There were a lot of babies playing in it.  We also went on a train that went around in circles. There was a playground too.  First you climb up a ladder then you go across a bridge then go down a slide.

Redwood trees

Hi!
Yesterday I did Ordering Fractions on Khan Academy.

I watched Climbing Redwood Giants.  I learned that the redwood trees drink the fog as water and that there are a lot of salamanders in the redwood trees.  Salamanders  have to be wet so they stay up there.  And I learned that the people who want to cut down the trees spray blue paint on the trees.

My PE work sample

Hi!

Every month I meet with my Sky Mountain teacher and talk about what I did for the month and give work samples for Math, History, Science, PE, and Language Arts.  This is what I wrote for my PE work sample:

"I am going to Atlanta because my Aunt is having a wedding.  I'm doing two dances with my cousins.  One of the dances goes like this:  first you clap two times and scratch the air two times.  For your feet you jog in place.  Do that three times.  The step after that is when you swing your arms back and forth 14 times.  While you are doing that, march in place.  Then do the clap, clap, scratch, scratch move again one time and after that, point up and move you hips.  Do that again.  The next move is when you push down with your arms and kick with your foot.  Then do it with your other foot with your arms up instead of down.  Then you clap two times and scratch two times.  That is the first song in the performance."

I finished The Tail of Emily Windsnap.  It's about a girl who turns into a mermaid because her dad is a merman.  So she is a mermaid and a human.  Her dad went to prison because humans and merpeople are not supposed to get married.  Emily found him and talked to Neptune.  Neptune said they could take her dad out, but they were supposed to  live somewhere else.

I read a book about the penguins that live on the Galapagos Islands.  They are called the Galapagos penguins. These penguins are tame.  They are not scared of people because we have been nice to them and feed them. Some people hunted them but they were sill friendly The Islands are near the Equator that's why it is hot there. They spread their wings and face the wind to cool off.

Penguins can’t fly because one time they knew how to fly and they flew somewhere. Then they learned how to swim so they couldn’t fly back. When penguin chicks hatch they are gray, fuzzy and blind. The chicks stay with their parents 30 days until they fledge. Fledging means when they learn to swim. Galapagos penguins are 21 inches and almost 5 pounds.  The males are bigger but that's the only difference between male and female Galapagos penguins.

Writing class

HI!
Today I had writing class.  Here is a story that I wrote called The Story of Lily Rainbownose:

Lily Rainbownose was always being made fun of because her nose was so big and rainbowy, otherwise she was normal.  One day she decided to run away.  She packed her pj's, her clothes, her toothbrush .......  But the last hing Lily packed was a picture of her mom, dad and sister Silvia Rainbownose.  She ran away just then and stomped out the door.  She ran to the park but then she said in her mind ''Maybe I should face the bully's.''  So she did.  And every one liked her now.

Last day of Young Chefs Academy

Hi!
Today was the last day of Young Chefs Academy.  I made ice cream cone fudge, spinach pasta, and candy Easter eggs.  I didn't like the candy Easter eggs.  They were too minty for me. For the pasta I used a pasta bike.  You had to put the dough in the pasta bike 10 times.  And in the fudge we put white chocolate chips, cherries, semi-sweet chocolate chips and smashed up 4 small ice cream cones.

This week for piano, I'm doing Stay by Rihanna, Minuet, Can can and jumping jazz cat.

Star testing

Hi
Today and yesterday I had Star Testing. It was really easy for me. The reading was easier than the math because you could do it at your own pace. I have 3 friends.  There names are: Victoria, Aria, and Cathrin.  At the end I got a ticket to get Jamba juice (but not for the store, it was outside the building.)

I have Stroke Clinic on Saturday and Monday at Waterworks.  I made one friend in the Saturday class.  Her name is Marissa.  The strokes I am doing are:  breast stroke, butterfly, freestyle and back stroke.

Last Thursday I went to soccer Skills Clinic.  My friends names are Amber, Clare, Mailika and Alexia. I played chain tag.  Chain tag is when 2 people hold on to the pinnie on  opposite sides and they try to tag people together.  After they tag you, you have to get a pinnie and join the chain.

Hi!
Last Thursday I went to Sequoia with my brothers soccer friend, Azim.  My mom found a frog in the house!  We put it in a cup, put a paper towel on top of the cup and then put a rubber band around it.  But then we let it go.  One more silly thing was Azim was walking out out of the bathroom and his underwear came out of his pants!

I learned on How Things Work that when you throw a ball, at the peak height (witch is when the ball stops to start falling  down) it has 0 velocity but it still has acceleration.

My story

This is a story I wrote from my writing class. This is a mix mach story:

    My science fair project was complete. I made a time machine, robot and a racing vehicle. I hid it in a cave  My robot, time machine and  racing vehicle were ready to show the world.   It was midnight in ancient Egypt, the Invisible Man and the Magician and the Robot who were short and lumpy were searching for a fire breathing Brontosaurus.  But they wanted to meet the President instead.  They were having trouble keeping control of my racing vehicle.  Then they found a cave and went in.  They went forward in time, only for my time machine to break.  Finally, I won the contest.  I learned that it pays off to work hard.

I learned from The Story of the World that China was split in half and the Northern part said that the Southern part had a lot of bugs and is really hot.  And they don't know anything about art or music!  Yang Chien got to be the emperor. And a dynasty  is where one family rules for a lot of years.  But they only ruled for 40 years.

Math

Hi!
Today I did Adding and Subtracting Mixed Numbers.

 I learned that Newton's First Law of Motion is An object that is free of external forces moves at a constant velocity on  How Things Work.

And I learned  that the Universe is getting bigger over time and the Universe used to be small.

I learned while i read The Story of the World that one day Muhammad had a headache and then he lie down and never got up. He was dead.  Who will rule Medina now?  The people of Medina chose Muhammad's friend Abu Bakr  to be the leader or Caliph.

Muslims

Hi!
Today I learned the Koran is Islam's holy book.  And I learned what the 5 pillars of Islam are. Here is one of the 5 pillars of Islam: Muslims have to pray to Allah 5 times a day.  Muslim children start praying when they are seven years old.  When they turn ten, they have to pray 5 times a day!

House and Ant Farm

Hi everybody!  The day before yesterday I made this. My dad told my an idea and I made it.  I used tent poles and pencils.  I used the pencils for bracing the Tent poles so it will be stable.  I had to use all the tape!

Today I did spelling page 64-65 on Why Johnny Can't Read.
This is my brothers Ant Farm. The ants made a lot of holes.

History

Hi!
Today I learned that the sign for Islam is a crescent moon , the sign of Jesus is a cross or a fish and that the Jews sign is the star of David. And I learned that the Old  Testament is the Torah.

I learned on How Things Work that Velocity is speed with direction. And that there are a lot of kinds of Acceleration,here is some of them:  Going forward, backward, right and left.  When you go left or right you spin.  And I learned that mass is the measure of an object's inertia.

Sounds

Hi!
For 2 weeks I am doing these songs:  Sunburst waltz, Tarantella, Shave and a haircut, Theme by Hayden and Dragon hunt.  My teacher said that if I do 10 checks for each song I will get a prize!  And if I do 15 checks for each song I will get a super prize!  Checks are when ever I do 1 song 2 times I get a check.

Today reading The Story of the World I learned about Muhammad's Vision.  Muhammad saw the angel, Gabriel and Gabriel told Muhammad that he was the messenger of the god, Allah.  So Muhammad said to everyone that there is only one god, his name is Allah.

I learned reading Sounds all Around that long ago people would use drum sounds like messages. Different drum sounds made different messages like rain clouds are forming or a new leader has been chosen.  And I learned that snakes have to put their head on the ground and feel the vibrations so he can tell that there is an enemy near by.

Monks

I read The Magic School Bus in the Time of the Dinosaurs and did Comparing Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers on Khan Academy

On Karel I got input from the user using readLine.

In chapter 3 of The Story of the World, I read about monks.  When there were no books the monks had to write them.  They made a special kind of paper called parchment.  This is how they made parchment : First they put cow or sheep skins in running water for several days .  Then they soaked it again in a barrel full of water and lime for several days more.  Finally they stretched out the skin, scrape of the hair with a knife and attach it to a frame so it can dry.  When the skin dried, they would take it of the frame and wet it again.  After that they rub it with a rough stone.  When the skin had dried it would have to be cut into rectangles folded over to make pages and stitched together to make booklets.

The Electric Field Trip

Hi!

Today I read The Magic School Bus and the Electric Field Trip.  I learned that everything is made out of atoms, and inside atoms is the nucleus and the electrons.  The nucleus makes the atom have weight and the electrons take all the other space.  When electrons run through a wire it's called an electric current. The word current comes from the words "to run".   When the electric current stops flowing from the power plant to the community it's called a blackout. When extra electrons stick to tiny droplets of water or ice in a storm, and enough of them gather in one spot they can jump from the clouds to the ground.  This is called lightning.

I also read Happy Birthday Mrs. Piggle Wiggle, and went skateboarding under the freeway on the Mountains to Sea Trail.

Little house in the big woods.

Hi!

I like Little House in the Big Woods. It is a very good book. It is about a family who lives in a big woods.  The people are named Laura, Mary, Ma, Pa and baby Carrie. They went  to there grandpas house and had a party there. They were dancing and the grandma and the grandma's son were jigging and the grandma's son got tired and the grandma won!

Their candy is hard maple syrup.  This is how they make it :  Get a pan of snow and  pour a little bit of maple syrup in the pan and keep on doing that 4 times in the same pan. Let it harden until it's chewy. Then you eat it.

Jump Roping

Hi everyone!

Today I jump roped 36 times!  I found a really cool jump roping video.

On Monday I scraped my knee on the ground and the day after that I had my flex try outs. When the try outs were almost over I hit my knee on the ground again! I am doing try outs today too. I think my knee will be fine though.

I found a Cashflow game online if you want to play with me. Tell me the name of your game.  You can email me if you want to play with me.

Beowulf the hero

Hi!
This is what i learned today;

I learned that the Celts were British warriors and the story of Beowulf the hero.  This is how it goes....
Once there was a warrior named Beowulf.  He was very strong.  Sometimes the other warriors would go to fight the giant, Grendel.  But every time they went to see Grendel he would eat them all up when they were sleeping.  Then Beowulf went to fight Grendel with his men.  Then Grendel  tried to eat one of Beowulf men and Beowulf twisted Grendel's arm and the arm fell off!  Grendel ran out of the room and drowned in a lake.

I learned how to indent the code on karel. First you indent the top code then the code insid that code and then the code inside that code and you keep doing that until you don't have any code left. The last code should be indented the most.

While loops

Hi!
Today I learned while loops on Karel. A while loops makes the thing you typed go over and over again and makes the stuff stop when something you typed is true. A while loops look like this:

 while (frontIsClear( )){
            putBall( );
            move( );
}

This week i am doing Boxcar Rumble and A Day at the Carnival for piano.

I learned on How Things Work an object that is in motion stays in motion and if you push against a skater and I push against the same skater at equal force the skater will not go anywhere.

In the Story of the World I learned that when people first made pyramids they were white. And the Romans called the Visigoths, Vandals, Huns, Goths and Ostrogoths barbarians.

If statements, Inertia

Hi!
Today I learned if statements in Karel.  If statements are thing like if you have the ball move two times. Or else if you don't have the ball turn left. This is what an if statement and looks like:

if (haveBall) {
    move();
    move();
}
else{
    turnLeft();
}

I learned science on How Things Work. I learned that a thing that is still stays still unless you push it. It is called Inertia. If you put some stuff on the table with a cloth on the table and you put the cloth off the things will stay in the same spot they have always been.

I did spelling on page 64 in Why Johnny Can't Read.

Karel

Hi!
